A Marine and a Trauma Surgeon - Saving lives in Iraq

[The following blog was originally posted on 1/15/07 on the Courier-Post town blogger site. They've since changed that project and took my blogs down... so I am reposting here. If there were reader comments with the original blog posts, they are not here as I couldn't find an easy way to repost them.]
On January 5th, 2007, the Marines released a news story of how a group of couragous Marines joined together to save the life of a 9 yr old Iraqi girl.

Cmdr. Tracy R Bilski, a trauma surgeon in the Marines, was part of the team that saved this young girl's life. One of the trauma team's roles is to make sure patients are stable enough for transport. With Cmdr. Bilski as part of the team, 9 yr old Riyam was stabilized and handed over to a Marine transport, heading on to her next stop with Neurosurgeons.

"Even when the Marines took off, we weren't sure if she would make it," said Cmdr. Tracy R. Bilski, a trauma surgeon with TQ Surgical.

The injury was so bad that doctors and corpsmen doubted whether she would survive the operation, much less walk and talk again. So when Riyam, patient number 1267, walked back into TQ Surgical a month later and asked for strawberry bubble gum, the staff was amazed.

"I couldn't believe it," said Bilski, from Bellmawr, N.J. Upon seeing the girl's outcome, Bilski burst into tears.

I don't know Commander Bilski, but she does call Bellmawr home, and I found other information on the internet that says she grew up in Bellmawr. I thought the residents of Bellmawr would appreciatte reading this story.

A trauma surgeon.
A Marine.
From Bellmawr.
